The last day of science camp was at our house. We started off by Exploring Colors and Chemical Reactions using baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring.
Next was something called Magic Milk
We filled up a paper plate with milk and added a few drops of food coloring. We dipped a Q-tip in dish soap then stuck it in the milk and the milk/colors spread quickly away.
The kids ended up with some very neat looking plates of colors.
We did growing gummy bears! I put the green gummy bear in water and after 2 days it got this big. We talked about osmosis and the kids each made their own gummy bear in water as a take home experiment. Although I think most of the kids just ate their gummy bear. I did get report several days later that Madeline ate her grown gummy bear and that it tasted yucky!
Dancing Popcorn
We watched the popcorn kernels move up and down in the water while we ate
popcorn and gummy bears for snack.
Soda Pop Explosion!!!
This was my absolute favorite part of the day. I was nervous going into this about how it would all turn out but it went great! The kids each got a soda pop and when it was their turn they dropped 4 mentos inside and we watched the soda pop explode out of the top.
Then we recorded on the yard stick how high the explosion was and how much soda pop remained still in the pop bottle. I'm sad I didn't get any pictures because I was recording it with video so we could replay and measure. But several of the soda pop's exploded up higher than my yard stick could measure. It was awesome!
And the kids loved it!! Definitely have to do this one again!
Then we finished up with homemade lava lamps!
I had so much fun doing this with the kids! In fact, I've already been thinking about that I want to try for next year! It was such a great experience! All the mom's did such amazing fun things and everyday my kids were so excited to show me what they made and tell me about what they did!
Looks like it was definitely a DIY science camp success!!
